hello six

there were gingerbread houses. and frosting in hair. and candy. oh, so much candy.

there were laughs and cupcakes and “just one more picture, girls!” (which of course is always a lie, as it’s NEVER just one more picture).

there was “happy birthday to you … “ in english AND german. i’m so sad we didn’t take a video of that, as i’m sure one day it will be unfathomable to piper that she clasped her hands behind her back and grinned and glowed as her friends sang to her in german.

there were friends. my heart was full as i looked around the room and realized how grateful i am that piper has found her circle here in germany. and that the circle keeps growing and strengthening. there was a confidence that didn’t exist at her party last year – an assurance that she belongs to these sweet girls, just as they belong to her. a circle of friendship, with bubbles and bursts of conversation in french, english and german popping up all over the apartment. piper rarely speaks german to us, so it was simply amazing and ohsoincredible to see her chatting away in this foreign language. i was in awe of my little lady.

there was popcorn and presents and gift bags and running through the apartment and wen sternly saying, “no more running, girls!” (which of course is silly, because there is ALWAYS running).

and there was a very, very happy 6-year old girl. beaming and proud and so full she almost burst. and as the last guest said goodbye, she closed the door, and started chattering away about what we’re going to do when she turns SEVEN! mom, what do you think? any ideas?

and i ate a cupcake and took a nap.

happy birthday, yummy girl.
